Research InterestsI am a second year graduate student with Alan Hastings in the Population Biology Ph.D program at UC Davis. I'm interested in stochastic processes in ecology and evolution. I am funded by a Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (CSGF) under the Department of Energy, administered through the Krell Institute.BioI was born in Philadelphia in 1985. I graduated from Harriton High School in Rosemont, PA in 2003 with an International Baccalaureate Diploma. I received my BA in Physics from Princeton University in 2007. I am currently a Ph.D candidate at University of California, Davis, in the Population Biology Graduate Program under Alan Hastings. I have an identical twin, Alistair Boettiger, who is currently in the biophysics Ph.D program at Berkeley.Experiential EducationI believe in experiential-based education in and out of the classroom. I think most people learn best by doing (and also teaching); often in small groups. In academics, I have been working with the CLIMB (Cloraborative Learning at the Interface of Mathematics and Biology) program at UC Davis, an NSF funded initiative in undergraduate education and research. Outside, I've worked extensively Princeton's Outdoor Action, and am now involved in outdoor education with homeless children in Sacramento through Inner City Outings and with college students through Davis Outdoor Adventures.Intentional CommunitiesI support sustainable and cooperative living. I am on the board of directors of Solar Community Housing Association (SCHA) and live at the Sunwise Co-op. I was previously a member of Brown Co-op.LinuxI have been a Linux user since 2004. Along the way I've benefited tremendously from support from many in the Linux community, so here is a description of my current system and some of the tricks I've learned along the way -- one way I hope to give something back. I'm also a grateful member of the Linux Users Group of Davis, and the Princeton Unix Group. |
